I truly believe that optimism is the route to good
health, well-being, and inner peace. Human beings want to feel good;
we are instinctively drawn to pleasurable experiences. When we are
happy and at peace inside ourselves, we’ll feel no need for
outside sources of artificial happiness. Alcohol, drugs, overeating
and other destructive addictions—these are ways people use to
try to feel better inside or to forget something that is painful.
But when you are optimistic and positive, you create your own, natural
happiness. When you look at experiences that you have labeled as “failures”
and find the positive lesson, you draw from them the wisdom they are
designed to teach and remove the lasting sting inside. In fact, you
change the negative feeling of the experience into a positive and
happy feeling; you turn the experience into a stepping stone toward
becoming who and what you want to be. When you change negative experiences
into positive ones, you naturally feel a positive energy running through
your body. This positive energy allows you to feel healthy and vital,
laugh more, say positive words to others (which actually spreads the
happy feelings and positive images to others, who naturally give it
back to you, continuing the cycle of spreading happiness, optimism,
health, well-being, and inner peace), and learn to look within for
happiness, erasing the need for artificial stimulation altogether.
So it makes complete sense that optimism affects us deeply.
